Hockey Philately
Hockey in India is at the lowest ebb at the moment. The ubiquitous handkerchief-wearing Sikh players on the hockey field in Olympics were missing at the Beijing Olympics. Yet, for some, like our new author, hockey is in their veins. World Sikh News is happy to have a hockey writer on board. This first person piece by Diljit Singh Bahra, fondly known as Dil Bahra, is a vivid account of his hockey tournament in life –on and off the field. He is chronicling the contribution of Sikh players, particularly hockey players in a passionate and painstaking manner and his latest website www.hockeyonstamps.com is an example of his dedication to the game. Released on the web only last week, World Sikh News is glad to premiere it in World Sikh News. Hockey is my first love. My love for the game goes back to the fifties when I played hockey for my school team, the Menegai High School, Nakuru in Kenya and for the Nakuru Rangers, a club run by Harvinder Singh Marwa, who was a Kenyan International at the time ...

Sikhs and Olympics
Sikh shooter wins first ever individual gold for India at OlympicsAbhinav Bindra’s father says Gold proves Singh Is King, indeed Sikh press Bureau As the world's biggest sporting extravaganza unfolds across the planet and billions of eyeballs get fixated on the best and the brightest, the Sikh community has many a reason to be proud. India celebrates the end of a drought as Abhinav Bindra shot for his country its first ever individual gold. He hails from a Sikh family. But what gives even more heart to the Sikh community is that the Beijing Olympics gave an opportunity to the community to celebrate the faith rising above national boundaries. The picture below of turbaned smart young Sardars is from the Opening Ceremony parade, all representing Canada. The idea of wearing turbans was a considered thought. Sikhs in Canada’s squad wanted to challenge this whole 'Identity' issue that ties them down to India origins. You can wear a turban and still be Canadian, or American, or British. ...

‘Gill’s meeting :- Sikh Press
New Delhi: Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Suresh Kalmadi on Tuesday denounced former Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) chief KPS Gill's move to convene an executive committee meeting of the disbanded body, calling it illegal. Reacting to the news that Gill has convened a meeting on Friday, Kalmadi said the move defied logic. "I don't understand how he calls the meeting. IHF has been dissolved and KPS Gill is no more the IHF President. The body doesn't exist anymore and it's definitely not legal (to call executive body meeting)," Kalmadi said. "There is no recognition from the IOA, the International Hockey Federation and the government as well," he added. Asked about whether it would affect the way of working of the new ad hoc committee, Kalmadi rubbished such possibility saying, "No, not at all." Earlier, one of the former executive committee member of IHF confirmed Gill's decision to convene the meeting on Friday. "I have heard that a meeting will be held at Gill's residence on May 16. But I ...

Gill sacked, Bhajji banned: Shed no tears :- Gurpreet Singh
NEW DELHI: Strange how India calls a habitual loser its Supercop. KPS Gill even shamed those who propped him up with unearned epithets for more than two decades now. As a police officer, he earned ignominy and was convicted in a case of moral turpitude. In the line of duty, he bloodied his hands and soul with the killings of innocent Sikh youth. In sports, he will always be known as the man who presided over the death and final decimation of Indian hockey, cling like a limpet to the body administering the sport and finally had to be kicked out to the benefit of prime time international TV. Afterall, a Supercop's ignominy has to be multiplied a million-times and beamed into all drawing rooms for his ego to be massaged. Rules made it difficult to remove KPS Gill from Presidentship of Indian Hockey Federation; so the sports domain honchos got together and knocked out the IHF itself. Now Gill has nothing to head. A hero we can do without Harbhajan Singh is one hell of a PR disaster. Appears in liquor ...
