Tips for good foot health
Don't ignore foot pain It's not normal. If the pain persists, see a podiatrist. Inspect your feet regularly Pay attention to changes in color and temperature of feet; look for thick or discolored nails (a sign of fungus); check for cracks or cuts in skin. Any growth on the foot is not considered normal. Take care of your feet Wash regularly, especially between the toes, and dry completely. Trim toenails straight across, not too short. Don't cut nails in corners or on sides -- that can lead to ingrown toenails. Buy and wear proper shoes Purchase shoes later in the day, when feet tend to be at their biggest. Choose a shoe that fits your activities (running, playing basketball). Replace worn-out shoes as soon as possible. Alternate shoes Don't wear the same pair of shoes every day. Avoid walking barefooted Your feet will be more prone to injury and infection. See a podiatrist If you have diabetes, visit a podiatrist at least once a year for a check-up. --Barb ...

Tips on creaming stretch marks
Many women around the world suffer from stretch marks. Stretch marks are usually the result of weight gain or growth spurts, and are scars caused by the skin 'tearing' when it gets stretched past its limit of elasticity. Over time, stretch marks can diminish but won't disappear completely. Researchers estimate that between 75 per cent and 90 per cent of women will develop stretch marks to some degree during pregnancy. Treatment and Prevention Various treatments are available for the purpose of improving the appearance of existing stretch marks. Such treatments include laser treatment, dermabrasion, and prescription retinoids. In the early stages, stretch marks can sometimes be reduced with over-the-counter moisturising creams, particularly those containing vitamins A or E. Creams containing alpha hydroxy acids can also help. Tretinoin or retin A make the outer layer of the skin thinner so that the cream can reach the dermis where it increases the amount of collagen produced. These creams ...

Sikh Woman Gets Bone Marrow From German Woman, Creating Lasting Bond
REGINA -- Harmeet Maur changed the date of her birthday from June 12 to Sept. 28 -- the day a generous young German woman gave her the gift of a lifetime. Diagnosed with leukemia in 2004, Maur was told she needed chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant or she'd die within a year. "They told me that it is very hard to find a donor because I am from Asia and not many people from Asia put their name on the registry," said the 37-year-old Regina mother of two. After Maur's name was put on the Canadian Blood Services' OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network (formerly the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry), she had a long anxious wait before she received a call to tell her that stem cells from Ina Kutzsche in Dresden, Germany were a match. "My first Christmas I wrote her a letter anonymously and said, 'Thank you for saving my life. You didn't just save my life, you saved my whole family's life.' I had the bone marrow transplant on Sept. 28, 2004 so now I celebrate my birthday on that day," Maur ...

Our stress levels are high and maintaining the work-life balance is a challenge. Does this describe your lifestyle? Or close to it? High Blood Pressure May Protect Against Migraine
ScienceDaily (Apr. 16, 2008) — People with high blood pressure appear to be less likely to have migraine than those with low blood pressure. Researchers say stiff arteries associated with high blood pressure may play a role in protecting against migraine. Researchers tested the blood pressure of 51,353 men and women over the age 20 in Norway, including the systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure rates. Pulse pressure is the change in blood pressure when the heart contracts. The rate is determined by subtracting the diastolic blood pressure, the bottom number, from the systolic blood pressure, or the top number. The participants also completed a survey on the presence and frequency of headaches and their use of blood pressure medications. The study found people with higher systolic blood pressure were up to 40 percent less likely to have a headache or migraine compared to people with healthier blood pressure rates. "Higher pulse pressure was linked to up to a 50-percent reduction in the amount ...

Cashews boost blood-pressure-regulating reflex
Eating a diet rich in cashew nuts improves the sensitivity of a key reflex for maintaining healthy blood pressure known as the baroreflex, South African researchers report. However, Dr. Aletta E. Schutte of North-West University, Potchefstroom and colleagues found that eating a diet rich in walnuts actually impaired baroreflex sensitivity. They call for more research into the effects of eating large quantities of nuts on heart health. The baroreflex becomes less sensitive as heart disease develops. People with metabolic syndrome, a constellation of symptoms including obesity, high cholesterol and high blood sugar, have an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes, and also have impaired baroreflex sensitivity. Cashews are high in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), while walnuts contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). To investigate the effect of the nuts in people with the metabolic syndrome, Schutte and her colleagues divided 62 people with the syndrome into three groups. One followed a ...
